PURPOSE: To detect and analyze the influence of the duration of tamponade with silicone oil on the foveal and parafoveal thickness in cases of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study of 64 eyes with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in one eye who underwent pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) with silicone oil injection during the period between January 2019 and December 2021. The patients were divided into 2 groups. Group A with early removal of the silicone oil after 3-4 months and Group B with late removal of the silicone oil (SOR) after 6-8 months. The 2 groups were compared as regards the central foveal (CFT) and parafoveal (PFT) thickness changes from baseline, just before SOR, and after SOR. Changes in best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), relative risk of severe thinning. It was conducted at Kasr Alainy Hospital. RESULTS: 64 eyes were enrolled in the study. Group A included 36 eyes, and group B included 28 eyes. The mean CFT changed insignificantly from 253 ± 52 µm to 252 ± 48 µm after SOR in group A; while it changed significantly from 211 ± 52 µm to 202 ± 46 µm after SOR in group B. The mean PFT decreased insignificantly from 299 ± 39 µm to 297 ± 40 µm in group A, while it decreased significantly from 284 ± 46 µm to 273 ± 44 µm in group B. Lines of improvement of BCVA were 4.11 ± 1.88 in group A, and 2.00 ± 1.24 in group B. Relative risk of severe foveal thinning after SOR was 14.3, and severe parafoveal thinning was 15.43, in group B compared to group A. CONCLUSION: Longer period of silicone oil tamponade may carry a higher risk for severe foveal and parafoveal thinning after silicone oil removal. Purpose: Pathogenic variants in North Carolina macular dystrophy (NCMD) have rarely been reported in the East Asian population. Herein, we reported novel variants of NCMD in 2 Korean families. Methods: The regions associated with NCMD were analyzed with genome sequencing, and variants were filtered based on the minor allele frequency (0.5%) and heterozygosity. Non-coding variants were functionally annotated using multiple computational tools. Results: We identified two rare novel variants, chr6:g.99,598,914T>C (hg38; V17) and chr6:g.99,598,926G>A (hg38; V18) upstream of PRDM13 in families A and B, respectively. In Family 1, Grade 2 NCMD and a best-corrected visual acuity of 20/25 and 20/200 in the right and left eyes, respectively, were observed. In Family B, all affected individuals had Grade 1 NCMD with characteristic confluent drusen at the fovea and a best-corrected visual acuity of 20/20 in both eyes. These two variants are 10-22 bp downstream of the reported V10 variant within the DNase1 hypersensitivity site. This site is associated with progressive bifocal chorioretinal atrophy and congenital posterior polar chorioretinal hypertrophy and lies in the putative enhancer site of PRDM13. Conclusion: We identified two novel NCMD variants in the Korean population and further validated the regulatory role of the DNase1 hypersensitivity site upstream of PRDM13.

Humans can rapidly identify materials, such as wood or leather, even within a complex visual scene. Given a single image, one can easily identify the underlying "stuff," even though a given material can have highly variable appearance; fabric comes in unlimited variations of shape, pattern, color, and smoothness, yet we have little trouble categorizing it as fabric. What visual cues do we use to determine material identity? Prior research suggests that simple "texture" features of an image, such as the power spectrum, capture information about material properties and identity. Few studies, however, have tested richer and biologically motivated models of texture. We compared baseline material classification performance to performance with synthetic textures generated from the Portilla-Simoncelli model and several common image degradations. The textures retain statistical information but are otherwise random. We found that performance with textures and most degradations was well below baseline, suggesting insufficient information to support foveal material perception. Interestingly, modern research suggests that peripheral vision might use a statistical, texture-like representation. In a second set of experiments, we found that peripheral performance is more closely predicted by texture and other image degradations. These findings delineate the nature of peripheral material classification.

Purpose: This study aims to examine the short-term peripheral choroidal thickness (PChT) response to signed defocus blur, both with and without native peripheral aberrations. This examination will provide insights into the role of peripheral aberration in detecting signs of defocus. Methods: The peripheral retina (temporal 15°) of the right eye was exposed to a localized video stimulus in 11 young adults. An adaptive optics system induced 2D myopic or hyperopic defocus onto the stimulus, with or without correcting native peripheral ocular aberrations (adaptive optics [AO] or NoAO defocus conditions). Choroidal scans were captured using Heidelberg Spectralis OCT at baseline, exposure (10, 20, and 30 minutes), and recovery phases (4, 8, and 15 minutes). Neural network-based automated MATLAB segmentation program measured PChT changes from OCT scans, and statistical analysis evaluated the effects of different optical conditions over time. Results: During the exposure phase, NoAO myopic and hyperopic defocus conditions exhibited distinct bidirectional PChT alterations, showing average thickening (10.0 ± 5.3 µm) and thinning (-9.1 ± 5.5 µm), respectively. In contrast, induced AO defocus conditions did not demonstrate a significant change from baseline. PChT recovery to baseline occurred for all conditions. The unexposed fovea did not show any significant ChT change, indicating a localized ChT response to retinal blur. Conclusions: We discovered that the PChT response serves as a marker for detecting peripheral retinal myopic and hyperopic defocus blur, especially in the presence of peripheral aberrations. These findings highlight the significant role of peripheral oriented blur in cueing peripheral defocus sign detection.

Purpose: Achromatopsia (ACHM) is an autosomal recessive retinal disease associated with reduced or absent cone function. There is debate regarding the extent to which cone structure shows progressive degeneration in patients with ACHM. Here, we used optical coherence tomography (OCT) images to evaluate outer nuclear layer (ONL) thickness and ellipsoid zone (EZ) integrity over time in individuals with ACHM. Methods: Sixty-three individuals with genetically confirmed ACHM with follow-up ranging from about 6 months to 10 years were imaged using either Bioptigen or Cirrus OCT. Foveal cone structure was evaluated by assessing EZ integrity and ONL thickness. Results: A total of 470 OCT images were graded, 243 OD and 227 OS. The baseline distribution of EZ grades was highly symmetrical between eyes (P = 0.99) and there was no significant interocular difference in baseline ONL thickness (P = 0.12). The EZ grade remained unchanged over the follow-up period for 60 of 63 individuals. Foveal ONL thickness showed a clinically significant change in only 1 of the 61 individuals analyzed, although detailed adaptive optics imaging revealed no changes in cone density in this individual. Conclusions: ACHM appears to be a generally stable condition, at least over the follow-up period assessed here. As cones are the cellular targets for emerging gene therapies, stable EZ and ONL thickness demonstrate therapeutic potential for ACHM, although other aspects of the visual system need to be considered when determining the best timing for therapeutic intervention.

In primates, high-acuity vision is mediated by the fovea, a small specialized central region of the retina. The fovea, unique to the anthropoid lineage among mammals, undergoes notable neuronal morphological changes during postnatal maturation. However, the extent of cellular similarity across anthropoid foveas and the molecular underpinnings of foveal maturation remain unclear. Here, we used high-throughput single-cell RNA sequencing to profile retinal cells of the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus), an early divergent in anthropoid evolution from humans, apes, and macaques. We generated atlases of the marmoset fovea and peripheral retina for both neonates and adults. Our comparative analysis revealed that marmosets share almost all their foveal types with both humans and macaques, highlighting a conserved cellular structure among primate foveas. Furthermore, by tracing the developmental trajectory of cell types in the foveal and peripheral retina, we found distinct maturation paths for each. In-depth analysis of gene expression differences demonstrated that cone photoreceptors and Müller glia (MG), among others, show the greatest molecular divergence between these two regions. Utilizing single-cell ATAC-seq and gene-regulatory network inference, we uncovered distinct transcriptional regulations differentiating foveal cones from their peripheral counterparts. Further analysis of predicted ligand-receptor interactions suggested a potential role for MG in supporting the maturation of foveal cones. Together, these results provide valuable insights into foveal development, structure, and evolution.

Reading is a primary concern of patients with central field loss (CFL) because it is typically performed with foveal vision. Spatial remapping offers one potential avenue to aid in reading; it entails shifting occluded letters to retinal areas where vision is functional. Here, we introduce a method of creating and testing different remapping strategies-ways to remap text-customized for CFL of different shapes. By simulating CFL in typically-sighted individuals, we tested the customization hypothesis-that the benefits of different remapping strategies will depend on the properties of the CFL. That is, remapping strategies will aid reading differentially in the presence of differently shaped CFL. In Experiment 1, letter recognition in the presence of differently shaped CFL was assessed in and around central vision. Using these letter recognition "maps" different spatial remappings were created and tested in Experiment 2 using a word recognition task. Results showed that the horizontal gap remapping, which did not remap any letters vertically, resulted in the best word recognition. Results were also consistent with the customization hypothesis; the benefits of different remappings on word recognition depended on the different CFL shapes. Although the horizontal gap remapping resulted in very good word recognition, tailoring remapping strategies to the shape of patients' CFL may aid reading with the wide range of sizes and shapes encountered by patients with CFL.

Purpose: To understand the association between anatomical parameters of healthy eyes and optical coherence tomography (OCT) circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (cpRNFL) thickness measurements. Methods: OCT cpRNFL thickness was obtained from 396 healthy eyes in a commercial reference database (RDB). The temporal quadrant (TQ), superior quadrant (SQ), inferior quadrant (IQ), and global (G) cpRNFL thicknesses were analyzed. The commercial OCT devices code these values based on percentiles (red, <1%; yellow, ≥1% and <5%), after taking age and disc area into consideration. Four anatomical parameters were assessed: fovea-to-disc distance, an estimate of axial length, and the locations of the superior and the inferior peaks of the cpRNFL thickness curve. Pearson correlation values were obtained for the parameters and the thickness measures of each of the four cpRNFL regions, and t-tests were performed between the cpRNFL thicknesses coded as abnormal (red or yellow, <5%) versus normal (≥5%). Results: For each of the four anatomical parameters, the correlation with the thickness of one or more of the TQ, SQ, IQ, and G regions exceeded the correlation with age or disc area. All four parameters were significantly (P < 0.001) associated with the abnormal cpRNFL values. The significant parameters were not the same for the different regions; for example, a parameter could be negatively correlated for the TQ but positively correlated with the SQ or IQ. Conclusions: In addition to age and disc area, which are used for inferences in normative databases, four anatomical parameters are associated with cpRNFL thickness. Translational Relevance: Taking these additional anatomical parameters into consideration should aid diagnostic accuracy.

This paper reviews projection models and their perception in realistic pictures, and proposes hypotheses for three-dimensional (3D) shape and space perception in pictures. In these hypotheses, eye fixations, and foveal vision play a central role. Many past theories and experimental studies focus solely on linear perspective. Yet, these theories fail to explain many important perceptual phenomena, including the effectiveness of nonlinear projections. Indeed, few classical paintings strictly obey linear perspective, nor do the best distortion-avoidance techniques for wide-angle computational photography. The hypotheses here employ a two-stage model for 3D human vision. When viewing a picture, the first stage perceives 3D shape for the current gaze. Each fixation has its own perspective projection, but, owing to the nature of foveal and peripheral vision, shape information is obtained primarily for a small region of the picture around the fixation. As a viewer moves their eyes, the second stage continually integrates some of the per-gaze information into an overall interpretation of a picture. The interpretation need not be geometrically stable or consistent over time. It is argued that this framework could explain many disparate pictorial phenomena, including different projection styles throughout art history and computational photography, while being consistent with the constraints of human 3D vision. The paper reviews open questions and suggests new studies to explore these hypotheses.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate structure-function correlations in multiple evanescent white dot syndrome (MEWDS) using microperimetry (MP) and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). Methods: Single-center prospective observational study including 14 eyes from 13 patients with MEWDS monitored over a median of 49.5 days (interquartile range = 29-92 days). Investigations focused on best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), foveal granularity, and the Photoreceptor Reflectivity Ratio (PRR) as a measure of photoreceptor integrity. MP assessed average retinal threshold sensitivity (RTS) and bivariate contour ellipse area (BCEA) for fixation stability. A linear mixed model was used to test associations and interactions among RTS, time, and clinical variables. A hierarchical linear mixed model was used to analyze structure-function relationships, addressing both individual and location-specific variations. Results: Overall, 2340 MP locations were tested. PRR revealed a transient decrease within 30 days post-presentation, indicative of early photoreceptor disruption, followed by a progressive increase, signaling recovery. Significantly lower foveal sensitivity (RTS = 14.8 ± 7.4 vs. 22.5 ± 4.4 decibel [dB], P = 0.04) and increased fixation spread (63% BCEA = 1.26 ± 0.97 vs. 0.48 ± 0.35 deg2, P = 0.06) were noted in eyes with foveal granularity compared to those without. A significant increase in RTS was demonstrated over time (0.066 dB/day, P < 0.001), with a central-to-peripheral gradient of improvement. The interaction between follow-up time and baseline BCVA (P < 0.001) indicated more rapid improvement in eyes with worse initial vision. There was a robust, nonlinear association between PRR and RTS across all tested locations (P < 0.001), becoming asymptotic for sensitivity losses exceeding 20 dB. Conclusions: Photoreceptor reflectivity accurately aligned with visual function in MEWDS on longitudinal examinations. The central-to-peripheral gradient of improvement may suggest specific vulnerabilities underlying the area around the disc.

Purpose: To investigate the choroidal vascularity index (CVI) and choroidal structural changes in children with nephrotic syndrome. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study involving 45 children with primary nephrotic syndrome and 40 normal controls. All participants underwent enhanced depth imaging-optical coherence tomography examinations. An automatic segmentation method based on deep learning was used to segment the choroidal vessels and stroma, and the choroidal volume (CV), vascular volume (VV), and CVI within a 4.5 mm diameter circular area centered around the macular fovea were obtained. Clinical data, including blood lipids, serum proteins, renal function, and renal injury indicators, were collected from the patients. Results: Compared with normal controls, children with nephrotic syndrome had a significant increase in CV (nephrotic syndrome: 4.132 ± 0.464 vs. normal controls: 3.873 ± 0.574; P = 0.024); no significant change in VV (nephrotic syndrome: 1.276 ± 0.173 vs. normal controls: 1.277 ± 0.165; P = 0.971); and a significant decrease in the CVI (nephrotic syndrome: 0.308 [range, 0.270-0.386] vs. normal controls: 0.330 [range, 0.288-0.387]; P < 0.001). In the correlation analysis, the CVI was positively correlated with serum total protein, serum albumin, serum prealbumin, ratio of serum albumin to globulin, and 24-hour urine volume and was negatively correlated with total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, urinary protein concentration, and ratio of urinary transferrin to creatinine (all P < 0.05). Conclusions: The CVI is significantly reduced in children with nephrotic syndrome, and the decrease in the CVI parallels the severity of kidney disease, indicating choroidal involvement in the process of nephrotic syndrome. Translational Relevance: Our findings contribute to a deeper understanding of how nephrotic syndrome affects the choroid.

BACKGROUND: Myopic traction maculopathy (MTM) is a complication of pathological myopia and encompasses various pathological conditions caused by tractional changes in the eye. These changes include retinoschisis, foveal retinal detachment, and lamellar or full-thickness macular holes (FTMHs). This meta-analysis evaluated the safety and efficacy of novel surgical for treating MTM. METHODS: To compare the outcomes of different surgical approaches for MTM, multiple databases, including Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, ClinicalTrials.gov, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, and the Meta-Register of Controlled Trials, were comprehensively searched. The meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.1. RESULTS: Nine comparative studies involving 350 eyes were included in this meta-analysis. There were significant differences between fovea-sparing internal limiting membrane peeling (FSIP) and standard internal limiting membrane peeling (ILMP). Preoperative best-corrected visual acuity BCVA (standard mean difference (SMD): -0.10, 95% CI: -0.32 to 0.12) and central foveal thickness CFT (SMD: 0.05, 95% CI: -0.22 to 0.33) were not significantly different (p = 0.39 and p = 0.71, respectively). However, the postoperative BCVA improved significantly (SMD = - 0.47, 95% CI: - 0.80, - 0.14, p = 0.006) in the FSIP group compared to the standard ILMP group. Postoperative CFT did not differ significantly between the two groups (p = 0.62). The FSIP group had a greater anatomical success rate than the other groups, although the difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.26). The incidence of postoperative macular hole formation was significantly lower (OR = 0.19, 95% CI = 0.07-0.54; p = 0.05) in the FSIP group than in the standard ILMP group. The unique characteristics of highly myopic eyes, such as increased axial length and structural changes, may have contributed to the greater incidence of FTMH in the ILMP group. CONCLUSION: Based on the findings of this meta-analysis, FSIP is the initial surgical approach for early-stage MTM and has shown promising outcomes. However, to establish the safest and most efficient surgical technique for treating different MTM stages, further comparative studies, specifically those focusing on ILMP and FSIP, are necessary. Purpose: To assess the degree to which quantitative foveal structural measurements account for variation in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) in human albinism. Methods: BCVA was measured and spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) images were acquired for 74 individuals with albinism. Categorical foveal hypoplasia grades were assessed using the Leicester Grading System for Foveal Hypoplasia. Foveal anatomical specialization (foveal versus parafoveal value) was quantified for inner retinal layer (IRL) thickness, outer segment (OS) length, and outer nuclear layer (ONL) thickness. These metrics, participant sex, and age were used to build a multiple linear regression of BCVA. This combined linear model's predictive properties were compared to those of categorical foveal hypoplasia grading. Results: The cohort included three participants with type 1a foveal hypoplasia, 23 participants with type 1b, 33 with type 2, ten with type 3, and five with type 4. BCVA ranged from 0.08 to 1.00 logMAR (mean ± SD: 0.53 ± 0.21). IRL ratio, OS ratio, and ONL ratio were measured in all participants and decreased with increasing severity of foveal hypoplasia. The best-fit combined linear model included all three quantitative metrics and participant age expressed as a binary variable (divided into 0-18 years and 19 years or older; adjusted R2 = 0.500). This model predicted BCVA more accurately than a categorical foveal hypoplasia model (adjusted R2 = 0.352). Conclusions: A quantitative model of foveal specialization accounts for more variance in BCVA in albinism than categorical foveal hypoplasia grading. Other factors, such as optical aberrations and eye movements, may account for the remaining unexplained variance.

Purpose: To investigate topographical maps of the three-dimensional choroidal vascularity index (3D-CVI) in children with different levels of myopia. Methods: We enrolled 274 eyes from 143 children with various severity of myopia, including emmetropia (EM), low myopia (LM), and moderate-high myopia (MHM). The choroidal vessel volume (CVV), choroidal stroma volume (CSV), and 3D-CVI in different eccentricities (fovea, parafovea, and perifovea) and quadrants (nasal, temporal, superior, and inferior) were obtained from swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCTA) volume scans. All choroidal parameters were compared among groups, and the associated factors contributing to different 3D-CVIs were analyzed. Results: Compared to the less myopic group, the more myopic group showed a significant decrease in CVV and CSV (MHM < LM < EM) and a significant increase in the 3D-CVI (MHM > LM > EM) in most areas (all P < 0.05). The nasal quadrant had the greatest 3D-CVI and lowest CSV and CVV, and vice versa in the temporal quadrant. The 3D-CVIs of the EM and LM groups gradually increased from the fovea to the perifovea, whereas the 3D-CVI of the MHM group first decreased and then increased. Regression analysis showed that axial length was an independent risk factor affecting foveal and parafoveal 3D-CVIs. Restricted cubic spline analysis revealed that the 3D-CVI increased with spherical equivalent (SE) when the SE was less than threshold and decreased when the SE was greater than threshold (SE thresholds for foveal, parafoveal, and perifoveal 3D-CVIs were -5.25 D, -5.125 D, and -2.00 D, respectively; all P < 0.05). Conclusions: Children with myopia exhibited decreased CSV and CVV, increased 3D-CVIs, and altered 3D-CVI eccentricity characteristics (from the fovea to the perifovea). The quadratic relationship between the 3D-CVI and SE should be explored in longitudinal investigations.

A delayed foveal mask affects perception of peripheral stimuli. The effect is determined by the timing of the mask and by the similarity with the peripheral stimulus. A congruent mask enhances performance, while an incongruent one impairs it. It is hypothesized that foveal masks disrupt a feedback mechanism reaching the foveal cortex. This mechanism could be part of a broader circuit associated with mental imagery, but this hypothesis has not as yet been tested. We investigated the link between mental imagery and foveal feedback. We tested the relationship between performance fluctuations caused by the foveal mask-measured in terms of discriminability (d') and criterion (C)-and the scores from two questionnaires designed to assess mental imagery vividness (VVIQ) and another exploring object imagery, spatial imagery and verbal cognitive styles (OSIVQ). Contrary to our hypotheses, no significant correlations were found between VVIQ and the mask's impact on d' and C. Neither the object nor spatial subscales of OSIVQ correlated with the mask's impact. In conclusion, our findings do not substantiate the existence of a link between foveal feedback and mental imagery. Further investigation is needed to determine whether mask interference might occur with more implicit measures of imagery.

The foveal-feedback mechanism supports peripheral object recognition by processing information about peripheral objects in foveal retinotopic visual cortex. When a foveal object is asynchronously presented with a peripheral target, peripheral discrimination performance is affected differently depending on the relationship between the foveal and peripheral objects. However, it is not clear whether the delayed foveal input competes for foveal resources with the information processed by foveal-feedback or masks it. In the current study, we tested these hypotheses by measuring the effect of foveal noise at different spatial frequencies on peripheral discrimination of familiar and novel characters. Our results showed that the impairment of foveal-feedback was strongest for low-spatial frequency noise. A control experiment revealed that for spatially overlapping noise, low-spatial frequencies were more effective than medium-spatial frequencies in the periphery, but vice versa in the fovea. This suggests that the delayed foveal input selectively masks foveal-feedback when it is sufficiently similar to the peripheral information. Additionally, this foveal masking was periodic as evidenced by behavioral oscillations at around 5 Hz. Thus, we conclude that foveal-feedback supports peripheral discrimination of familiar and novel objects by periodically processing peripheral object information.

Advances in the care of premature infants have resulted in unprecedented rates of survival of these infants into adulthood, including those born at very low gestational ages. Ophthalmologists have historically followed premature infants to assess for the presence of and potential need for treatment of retinopathy of prematurity. However, a growing body of literature suggests that the ophthalmic consequences of prematurity extended beyond retinopathy of prematurity and that ophthalmic sequelae of prematurity can endure through adulthood even among formerly preterm adults who were never diagnosed with retinopathy of prematurity. These abnormalities can include a range of both anterior segment and posterior segment sequelae, including higher rates of corneal aberrations, ocular hypertension, strabismus, foveal anomalies, and retinal tears and detachments. This review aims to summarise this literature, underscoring the importance of lifelong examinations and regular monitoring for these complications among adults who were born prematurely.

The depth at which parafoveal words are processed during reading is an ongoing topic of debate. Recent studies using RSVP-with-flanker paradigms have shown that implausible words within sentences elicit an N400 component while they are still in parafoveal vision, suggesting that the semantics of parafoveal words can be accessed to rapidly update the sentence representation. To study this effect in natural reading, we combined the coregistration of eye movements and EEG with the deconvolution modeling of fixation-related potentials (FRPs) to test whether semantic plausibility is processed parafoveally during Chinese sentence reading. For one target word per sentence, both its parafoveal and foveal plausibility were orthogonally manipulated using the boundary paradigm. Consistent with previous eye movement studies, we observed a delayed effect of parafoveal plausibility on fixation durations that only emerged on the foveal word. Crucially, in FRPs aligned to the pretarget fixation, a clear N400 effect emerged already based on parafoveal plausibility, with more negative voltages for implausible previews. Once participants fixated the target, we again observed an N400 effect of foveal plausibility. Interestingly, this foveal N400 was absent whenever the preview had been implausible, indicating that when a word's (im)plausibility is already processed in parafoveal vision, this information is not revised anymore upon direct fixation. Implausible words also elicited a late positive component (LPC), but exclusively when in foveal vision. Our results not only provide convergent neural and behavioral evidence for the parafoveal uptake of semantic information, but also indicate different contributions of parafoveal versus foveal information toward higher level sentence processing.

With every saccadic eye movement, humans bring new information into their fovea to be processed with high visual acuity. Notably, perception is enhanced already before a relevant item is foveated: During saccade preparation, presaccadic attention shifts to the upcoming fixation location, which can be measured via behavioral correlates such as enhanced visual performance or modulations of sensory feature tuning. The coupling between saccadic eye movements and attention is assumed to be robust and mandatory and considered a mechanism facilitating the integration of pre- and postsaccadic information. However, until recently it had not been investigated as a function of saccade direction. Here, we measured contrast response functions during fixation and saccade preparation in male and female observers and found that the pronounced response gain benefit typically elicited by presaccadic attention is selectively lacking before upward saccades at the group level-some observers even showed a cost. Individual observer's sensitivity before upward saccades was negatively related to their amount of surface area in primary visual cortex representing the saccade target, suggesting a potential compensatory mechanism that optimizes the use of the limited neural resources processing the upper vertical meridian. Our results raise the question of how perceptual continuity is achieved and how upward saccades can be accurately targeted despite the lack of-theoretically required-presaccadic attention.
